Clear diamonds are the most expensive and desirable. However, most diamonds have traces of minerals, scratches or other minute undesirable traits. The GIA and AGSL have a system of rules and standards to summarize the number, location, size, and type of inclusions present in a diamond.
- FL, IF - Flawless, Internally Flawless – These diamonds have no flaws at all. They are rare.
- VVS1, VVS2- Very, Very Slightly Included. These diamonds have flaws but they are very small and difficult to detect. These are excellent quality diamonds.
- VS1, VS2- Very Slightly Included- The flaws or inclusions are not visible to the naked eye.
- SI1, SI2 Slightly Included- These inclusions are visible under 10x magnification and sometimes even with the unaided eye. They are valuable and considered to be of good quality.
- I1, I2, I3- Included- These diamonds of low grade quality are not fit for jewellery.
You should always go in for a very clear diamond, one in which you can’t see any defects, at least with the unaided eye.
If you want to compromise on clarity because of budget constraints then go in for a diamond with a good cut G or H colour. |
